“Tell Me” was released on September 5, 1995, as part of Groove Theory’s self-titled debut album. The song peaked at #5 on the American pop charts in 1995 and 1996 and was Groove Theory’s biggest international success.
Fun Facts:
- Bryce Wilson met Amel Larrieux in 1993 when she was working as a receptionist at Rondor Music. Wilson’s intent in forming the group was to optimize his production skills, while Larrieux wanted to become an R&B star on the global stage.
- After signing their first recording contract with Epic Records, the duo released their first album, Groove Theory, in 1995.
- The single “Tell Me” became a certified gold-selling hit single.
- The song inspired a number of other songs, including the 2003 song “Playing Games” by Raymond & Co and the globally acclaimed song “Touch Me” By Australian singer Starley.
- “Tell Me” stayed at the #6 spot in Australia for three weeks and made it to the highest-selling singles of the year in the country.
- Not surprisingly, it reached gold status in Australia.
- Groove Theory parted ways in 1999. Wilson paired with Makeda Davis and signed with Columbia records.
- Wilson’s partnership with Davis was unfruitful. He then pursued a career in acting while also doubling in music production. His successes include producing music for Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, and Amerie and appearing in the films “Trois and Hair Show” and “Beauty Shop.”
- Larrieux also continued in the music industry and continued writing songs under her own record label, Blisslife.
Lyrics
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh yeah
I’ve been doing my own thing
Love has always had a way of having bad timing
But to my great surprise, ever since I looked in your eyes
I had one question for you
Tell me if you want me to give you all my time
I wanna make it good for you ’cause you blow my mind
I promise, boy, that I’ll be true, you’re the perfect find
So tell me if you want me to
Yeah
If you thought I’d sleep on this
Boy, you’re wrong ’cause all I dream about is our first kiss
And you’re the first one to make me feel like this
And this is one opportunity that I can’t miss, no, no
Boy, you wanna know the deal
You are wondering if the words I’m saying are for real
‘Cause you got more appeal than any man in this whole world
And baby, I got to know how you feel, yeah
Tell me if you want me to give you all my time
I wanna make it good for you ’cause you blow my mind
I promise, boy, that I’ll be true, you’re the perfect find
So tell me if you want me to, ooh ooh
Sweetheart, now it’s time I let you know
I don’t wanna rush, we should take it slow
Boy, I can love you, can you help me grow
Give me a new beginning (And I’ll give you a happy ending)
Tell me if you want me to
(Oh, my love, please tell me if you want me to)
I want you to, I want you to
(I wanna make it good) Yes, I do
(I wanna make it good to you, baby)
Oh oh yeah, yeah
(So won’t you tell me) Tell me
(Tell me, whoa-ho-ho-oh, yeah)
(Tell me if you want me to)
(Ooh-hoo, ooh-ooh, baby)
(I wanna make it good for you)
(Huh, huh, huh, uh-huh)
(I promise, girl, that I’ll be true)
(Oh, ho, oh, oh)
(So tell me if you want me to)
(Tell me, baby)
Hey, hey
