Today’s song of the day is the famous pop-rock song “Save Tonight” by singer-songwriter Eagle-Eye Cherry.
The song was the lead single and opening track of the 1997 album Desireless.
Fun Facts:
- Cherry’s birth name is Eagle-Eye Lanoo Cherry. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden on May 7, 1968 to parents Don and Monika Cherry.
- He is of Choctaw descent from his paternal grandmother and African-American through his paternal grandfather.
- There are four other Cherry children, and all are musical—singer Neneh Cherry, violinist Jan Cherry, jazz musician David Ornette Cherry, and Christian Cherry.
- Eagle-Eye Cherry wrote the song as a reflection of his life as the son of a famous musician who traveled frequently.
- Cherry had only recently learned guitar when he wrote “Save Tonight,” having grown up playing drums. Because of his inexperience, he only wrote the song with four chords but cited limitation as a creative boon.
- The song was a radio success, reaching number two on the charts in Sweden, number five in the U.S., number six in the U.K., and number three in Ireland.
- The song was also a critical success, with Larry Flick from Billboard writing that it has a “richly soulful edge” and “storyteller lyrics that are smarter than what you’ll typically find on the radio.”
- Cherry felt that “Save Tonight” became a self-fulfilling prophecy, as its success led to constant touring and his girlfriend back home left him because of it.
- The music video for “Save Tonight” was filmed in Stockholm in September 1997. It’s a monochrome film with Cherry playing multiple characters and presented as though it was filmed in a single take.
- The Swedish boy band E.M.D. released a cover of the song in 2010..
Lyrics
Go on and close the curtains
‘Cause all we need is candlelight
You and me, and a bottle of wine
Gonna hold you tonight, uh, yeah
Well, we know I’m going away
And how I wish, I wish it weren’t so
So take this wine and drink with me
Let’s delay our misery
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
There’s a log on the fire
And it burns like me for you
Tomorrow comes with one desire
To take me away, oh, it’s true
It ain’t easy to say goodbye
Darlin’, please, don’t start to cry
‘Cause, girl, you know I’ve got to go, oh
And, Lord, I wish it wasn’t so
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Tomorrow comes to take me away
I wish that I, that I could stay
But, girl, you know I’ve got to go, oh
And, Lord, I wish it wasn’t so
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight
Oh, that’s right
Save tonight
Save tonight
