January 28, 2023

“I Don’t Want To” was released alongside the single “I Love Me Some Him,” peaking at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and # 9 on the R&B Singles chart.

It was released as a double “A” side single on March 11, 1997.

Fun Facts:

  • The song was featured on Toni Braxton’s second album, Secrets
  • “I Don’t Want To” peaked for a week at the top spot on the Hot Dance Music\Club Play chart in July 1997.
  • The hit single reached the # 4 spot on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.
  • “I Don’t Want To” was one of Braxton’s most requested songs.
  • The single originally had no accompanying music video. When the album was released, Braxton was co-headlining with Kenny G and was worn down from the tour. Music video director Bille Woodruff shot the whole video in about a day; it shows Toni Braxton in a white tank top singing and moving around a white room.
  • R. Kelly wrote the lyrics to “I Don’t Want To” and also became the song’s producer.
  • Braxton provides both the lead and the background vocals for the song.
  • Toni Braxton first began singing in the late 1980s with her four sisters—Traci, Trina, Tamar, and Towanda. The girls were known as The Braxtons and released their first single in 1990. Although the song did not have success, it did provide Toni with the exposure she needed to get recognized by Antonio “L.A” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.
  • Toni Braxton has won 7 Grammy awards, 7 American Music Awards, and 9 Billboard Music Awards.
  • She is considered one of the best-selling female artists in history, with over 70 million sales across the globe.
  • In 2011, she was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Lyrics

Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

Ooh-ooh, ooh baby

La-da-da-da-da, da da da da, yeah

I really don’t feel like talking on the phone

And I really don’t feel like company at home

Lately, I don’t wanna do

The things I used to do

Baby, since I lost you

And I don’t want to sing another love song, babe

I don’t want to hum another melody

I don’t want to live my life without you, babe (Yeah)

It’s drivin’ me crazy (Crazy)

I really don’t feel like smiling anymore

And I haven’t had the peace to sleep at all

Ever since you went away

Baby, my whole life has changed

I don’t wanna love, and I don’t wanna live

And I don’t want to sing another love song, baby

I don’t want to hum another melody

I don’t want to live my life without you, babe (No way)

It’s drivin’ me crazy (Crazy)

Until I don’t wanna laugh, I don’t wanna play

I don’t wanna talk, have nothing to say

I don’t want to tour, forget the show

How can I go on, now that you are gone?

I don’t want to (Make a note) sing another love song (Hey), babe

And I don’t want to (No way) hum another melody (Hey)

And I don’t want to (To live) live my life (No way) without you, babe (I don’t give a damn about nothin’, babe)

It’s drivin’ me crazy (Without you by my side, darlin’)

I don’t want (I) to (Don’t wanna) sing another love song, babe

And I don’t want to (No way) hum another melody

And I don’t want to (Live my life) live my life (No way) without you, babe (Baby, since you’ve been gone)

It’s drivin’ me crazy (I’ve been so all alone)

I don’t want (Come back) to (To me) sing another love song (I need some you), babe (Right here)

I don’t want (Don’t want) to (To sing) hum another melody
