December 25, 2022

“Unbelievable” by EMF appeared in the “Schubert Dip” in 1991 before it became a hit in many countries. The band originally released “Unbelievable” as their first single in the UK. It gained popularity in the UK’s dance clubs and pop radio, peaking top 3 in the 1990 UK single charts.

Song Facts:

  • “Unbelievable” samples “Oh” from the 1989 album Dice by Andrew Dice Clay, a US comedian. The album version uses “What the f–k was that,” a popular phrase by the comedian. He also appears in the song where he says, “It’s unbelievable” twice.
  • The group’s lead guitarist Ian Dench was the main songwriter.
  • “Unbelievable” had little initial success in America because the group didn’t promote it.
  • EMF played “Unbelievable” multiple times during their first American tour. The song soon became their signature single in the US.
  • The film Can’t Fight The Moonlight uses “Unbelievable” as the motif for the key moments throughout the 2000 film by LeAnn Rimes.
  • “Unbelievable” topped the 1991 US Billboard Hot 100.
  • Tom Jones performed “Unbelievable” on a British TV show with the EMF, where he narrated the song’s success in his live shows.
  • “I Believe” is in the same album as “Unbelievable.”
  • “Unbelievable” received a gold certification in the United States, Canada, and Australia for selling at least 500,000 copies.

Lyrics

Oh

What?

What… was that?

You burden me with your questions

You’d have me tell no lies

You’re always asking what it’s all about

But don’t listen to my replies

You say to me I don’t talk enough

But when I do I’m a fool

These times I’ve spent, I’ve realized

I’m going to shoot through and leave you

The things you say

Your purple prose just give you away

The things you say

You’re unbelievable (oh)

(What the…)

(What the… was that?)

You burden me with your problems

By telling me more than mine

I’m always so concerned

With the way you say you always have to stop

To think of us being one

Is more than I ever know

But this time, I realize

I’m going to shoot through and leave you

The things you say

Your purple prose just give you away

The things you say

You’re unbelievable (oh)

(What the…)

(One)

(What the…)

(One)

(What the)

(One)

(What the… was that?)

Seemingly lastless, don’t mean you can ask us

Pushing down the relative, bringing out your higher self

Think of the fine times, pushing down the better few

Instead of bringing out the clues to what the world and everything you answer to

Brace yourself with the greatest of ease

I know this world ain’t what it seems

You burden me with your questions

You’d have me tell no lies

You’re always asking what it’s all about

But don’t listen to my replies

You say to me I don’t talk enough

But when I do I’m a fool

These times I’ve spent, I’ve realized

I’m going to shoot through and leave you

The things you say

Your purple prose just give you away

The things you say

In thought I love you more

The things you say

Your purple prose just give you away

The things you say

You’re unbelievable (oh)

(What the…)

(One)

(What the…)

You’re so unbelievable (one)

(What the…)

(One)

(What the…)

You’re unbelievable

It’s unbelievable (oh)

(What the…)

(One)

(What the…)

(One)

(What the)

(What the… was that?)

You’re unbelievable
