Steinman wrote and recorded “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through” for the album Bad for Good. Although Steinman wrote the music for Meat Loaf’s 1977 album Bat Out of Hell, he worked with Rory Dodd to record the song because Meat Loaf could not sing his vocals. Meat Loaf was facing physical and mental challenges that required grueling therapy intervention. In 1993, the two teamed up and recorded “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through,” as was initially slated.
Fun Facts:
- Meat Loaf was born as Marvin Lee Aday on September 27, 1947 in Dallas, Texas.
- He got his nickname at birth after his dad declared he looked like nine pounds of ground chuck because he was so red. He had the nurses put “Meat” on his nursery crib. The name came out again in seventh grade after gaining weight as a play on his nickname M.L.
- In an attempt to avoid the draft, Meat Loaf gained 68 pounds. To his dismay, he was still drafted, in spite of his weight gain and being color blind. However, Meat Loaf never spent time in Vietnam. Instead, he left Texas and set up a new life in LA, where he eventually started his band.
- The Bat Out of Hell album performed incredibly well. It stayed on the charts for more than nine years and still sells 200,000 copies each year.
- The B-side of the song’s North American album features “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That).”
- “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through” was a top chatter that performed well on popular charts. It was # 13 on the 1993 US Billboard Hot 100 and #11 in the UK Singles chart.
- The song made it to the top 30 on Canada’s RPM.
- The music video features Angelina Jolie as a young girl who runs away.
- Unlike Steinman’s version, Meat Loaf’s “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through” has more instrumentation and aggressive saxophone.
- Meat Loaf died in Nashville on January 20, 2022. He reportedly passed from COVID-19 complications at the age of 74.
Lyrics
You can’t run away forever
But there’s nothing wrong with getting a good head start
You want to shut out the night, you want to shut down the sun
You want to shut away the pieces of a broken heart
Think of how we’d lay down together
We’d be listening to the radio so loud and so strong
Every golden nugget coming like a gift of the gods
Someone must have blessed us when he gave us those songs
I treasure your love
I never want to lose it
You’ve been through the fires of hell
And I know you’ve got the ashes to prove it
I treasure your love
I want to show you how to use it
You’ve been through a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know you’ve got the scars to prove it
Remember everything that I told you
And I’m telling you again that it’s true
When you’re alone and afraid, and you’re completely amazed
To find there’s nothing anybody can do
(Keep on believing, and you’ll discover baby)
There’s always something magic
(There’s always something magic)
There’s always something new (new)
And when you really-really need it the most
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through
The beat is yours forever
(The beat is yours forever)
The beat is always true (true)
And when you really-really need it the most
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through, for you
Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hold on to a you can get through the night
(Getting through the night)
I treasure your love (treasure your love)
I never want to lose it
You’ve been through the fires of hell
And I know you’ve got the ashes to prove it
I treasure your love
I want to show you how to use it
You’ve been through a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know you’ve got the scars to prove it
Remember everything that I told you
And I’m telling you again that it’s true
You’re never alone ’cause you can put on the phones
And let the drummer tell your heart what to do
(Keep on believing, and you’ll discover baby)
There’s always something magic
(There’s always something magic)
There’s always something new (new)
And when you really-really need it the most
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through
The beat is yours forever
(The beat is yours forever)
The beat is always true (true)
And when you really-really need it the most
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through, for you, yeah
