KISS FROM A ROSE by Seal

December 4, 2022

Seal was born in London on February 19, 1963, to a Nigerian mother and a Brazilian father. Before joining and touring with the funk band Push, Seal worked the nightclub scene performing with his melodic, soulful voice. He spent some time in Thailand with a blues band and traveled solo through India before returning to England by 1990, where he was about to meet and collaborate with Adamski.

Seal and his friend Adam Tinley (Adamski) started recording songs using nothing more than a synthesizer, vocals, and drum machine. These early recordings are the foundation for Seal’s first album and eventually, “Kiss From A Rose,” which was released on July 18, 1994.

Fun Facts:

  • The artist the world would one day know as Seal was given the name Sealhenry Samuel at birth, which he later shortened to Henry.
  • Seal and Adamski released the single “Killer” in 1990, which topped the British music chart and launched his career.
  • In 1991, Seal released his debut album, captivating listeners with his perfect-pitch voice. The album won numerous awards and placed Seal as a dominant male vocalist in the early nineties.
  • The song “Kiss From a Rose” was on his second album, Seal, although people refer to this album as Seal II.
  • The song was played during the closing credits of a Batman movie in 1993.
  • Despite the constant question, Seal refuses to expand on the lyrics, saying, “I have avoided explaining these lyrics for over 25 years. I’m not going to start doing it now” in a 2015 interview.
  • Originally, “Kiss from a Rose” was to be the background music for a love scene in the Batman Forever movie.
  • His facial scars are from a rare form of lupus called discoid lupus erythematosus.
  • Seal has won four Grammys.
  • He was one of the four judges on Australia’s version of The Voice.

Lyrics

There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.

You became the light on the dark side of me.

Love remained a drug that’s the high and not the pill.

But did you know,

That when it snows,

My eyes become large

And the light that you shine can be seen.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.

Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah.

And now that your rose is in bloom.

A light hits the gloom

On the gray.

There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say.

You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby.

To me you’re like a growing addiction that I can’t deny.

Won’t you tell me is that healthy, baby?

But did you know,

That when it snows,

My eyes become large

And the light that you shine can be seen.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.

Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah.

Now that your rose is in bloom.

A light hits the gloom

On the gray.

I’ve been kissed by a rose on the gray,

I’ve been kissed by a rose on the gray,

I’ve been kissed by a rose on the gray.

If I should fall along the way.

I’ve been kissed by a rose on the gray.

There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say.

You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain.

To me you’re like a growing addiction that I can’t deny, yeah.

Won’t you tell me is that healthy, baby.

But did you know,

That when it snows,

My eyes become large

And the light that you shine can be seen.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.

Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah.

Now that your rose is in bloom,

A light hits the gloom

On the gray.

Yes, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.

Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah.

And now that your rose is in bloom

A light hits the gloom

On the gray

Now that your rose is in bloom,

A light hits the gloom

On the gray.
