November 25, 2022

“Mouth” is a hit single by Australian singer and songwriter Merril Bainbridge for her debut album, The Garden. The song is the album’s first single, and it was Merril’s most popular, hitting the #1 spot on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart.

“Mouth” Became Merril’s biggest song of her career, although it had a slow start after its release in 1994, receiving little airplay.

Fun Facts:

  • Released on October 24, 1994 and re-issued in 1995, the hit song was certified platinum by Australia’s ARIA and gold by US’s RIAA.
  • Bainbridge first performed at the young age of 9 at a carnival contest. Her sisters convinced her to enter in hopes of winning some tickets. She came in 3rd place and won $20 worth of tickets.
  • The popular hit song has two music videos, with the first shot in both black and white and colored. They were both directed by Ross Fraser, co-founder of Gotham Records. In one of the videos, Bainbridge spends the whole time kissing a guy in the car.
  • It spent 26 weeks at the #1 spot in Australia and the #4 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.
  • The first 1994 release of the song quickly disappeared due to less airplay, charting outside the top 100, but later peaked in its ninth week after it was re-issued in 1995.
  • Merril’s debut single made her the first Australian female to top her native country’s charts.
  • “Mouth” was the 4th highest-selling single for 1995.
  • Although the song was nominated for seven ARIA Awards, it failed to win any.

Lyrics

I feel like I’ve been blown apart

There are pieces here

I don’t know where they go

I don’t know where they go

Kiss me on my salty lips

I bet you feel a little crazy

But for me

We’ll be famous on TV

Would it be my fault if I could turn you on?

Would I be so bad if I could turn you on?

When I kiss your mouth, I want to taste it

Turn you upside down, don’t want to waste it

I jump on you, you jump on me

You push me out and

Even though you know I love you

I’d be inclined to slap you in the mouth

When I kiss your salty lips

You will feel a little crazy

But for me

I’ll be famous on TV

Would it be my fault if I could turn you on?

Would I be so bad if I could turn you on?

When I kiss your mouth, I want to taste it

Turn you upside down, don’t want to waste it

Would it be my fault if I could turn you on?

Would I be so bad if I could turn you on?

When I kiss your mouth, I want to taste it

Turn you upside down, don’t want to waste it

Now, will it be my fault if I

Take your love and throw it wide

You might restrain me

But could you really blame me

And you will feel you’re blown apart

All the pieces there

Will fit to make you whole

And I know where they go

When I kiss your mouth, I want to taste it

Turn you upside down, don’t want to waste it
