“Mr. Vain” is the lead single from the German music group Culture Beat. It was released in 1993 with their second album, Serenity. 

Fun Facts:

• Torsten Fenslau formed the German Eurodance project, Culture Beat. He was also a pioneer in the early musical sound of Frankfurt.
• Torsten dreamt of being an architect. At the time, he was a popular DJ at Dorian Gray nightclub. In 1989, he joined with friends Peter Zweier and Jens Zimmermann to form Culture Beat.
• “Mr. Vain” was written by Steven Levis, Jay Supreme, and Nosie Katzmann. 
• Under frontman Tania Evans and rapper Jay Supreme, the song achieved the most success, topping the charts in 12 European countries. 
• “Mr. Vain” has sold 10 million records worldwide.
• While the song hit No. 1 in a few countries, it peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
• In 1994, “Mr. Vain” won the “Best International Dance Single” award at the German Echo Awards.
• The song reached the #17 spot on BuzzFeed’s list of The 101 Greatest Dance Songs of the ‘90s. 
• In the UK, “Mr. Vain” was the first single to top the UK SIngles Chart that was not released first on a 7-inch vinyl. It hit the top spot on August 22, 1993. 
• Noise Katzmann has since recorded a country version of the song.
