In 1993, a little-known Spanish Duo, Los Del Rio, recorded a song that became a glittering artifact three years later. Many people earned millions of dollars from “Macarena.”
The little-known song by Los Del Rio became a hit single everywhere. However, the Los Del Rio members had no input in the various “Macarena” mixes, remixes, or popular line dance moves. One of the “Macarena” remixes that became a club track came from the Madrid dance duo Fangoria. They added a syncopated electronic thump to the original “Macarena” while keeping the rhythms intact. This “Macarena” version helped the original song take off among Spanish-speaking nations.
DJ, John Caride, approached the Bayside Boys for a remix that included some English translations. The Bayside Boys’ version became a success in America and spread to other markets.
Fun Facts:
- BMG licensed and released “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix).”
- Miami mixers Carlos De Yarza and Mike Triay, who spent years making remixes and jingles, tailored the original song to produce “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix).” The two wrote and produced their remix in just 2 days! They sampled a line from George Michael’s 1992 single, “Too Funky.”
- John Caride requested “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)” because Miami’s Power 96 radio could not allow him to play Spanish music.
- This version of the song hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for 14 weeks in August 1996.
- “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)” became the longest single to stay on the Hot 100 for 60 weeks.
- On August 16, 1996, 50,000 people danced the Macarena in the Yankee Stadium. They received the world record for most people performing one dance at the same time.
- Macarena translates to “Mother of God.”
- In the original song, a girl is upset with her boyfriend for joining the military and retaliates by going out with other men. The Bayside Boys Mix is much more promiscuous and is a first-person account of a girl who gets mad at her boyfriend and decides to play around.
Lyrics
(Ay!)
(Ay!)
I am not trying to seduce you
(Ay!)
When I dance they call me Macarena
And the boys they say que estoy buena
They all want me, they can’t have me
So they all come and dance beside me
Move with me, chant with me
And if you’re good, I’ll take you home with me
Move with me, chant with me
And if you’re good, I’ll take you home with me
Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena
Que tu cuerpo es pa’ darle alegría y cosa buena
Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena
Hey Macarena! (Ay!)
Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena
Que tu cuerpo es pa’ darle alegría y cosa buena
Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena
Hey Macarena! (Ay!)

The boy whose name is Vitorino

He was no good so I, ha ha ha
