Today’s song of the day is the American Alternative Rock song “All I Want” by Toad the Wet Sprocket.

It became their best and most well-known song, ranking in the top twenty on the United States Billboard Hot 100 in September 1992, just one year after its release.

Fun Facts:

  • Toad the Wet Sprocket is an alternative rock band originally formed in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1986.
  • At the time, the band consisted of bassist Dean Dinning, guitarist/vocalist Glen Phillips, drummer Randy Guss, and guitarist Todd Nichols. However, Randy Guss left the band in 2020.

  • “All I Want” also performed well on the Canadian RPM chart of Top Singles.
  • The song marks a step of progress on Glen Phillips’ journey of the battle with depression. The lyrics describe various emotions with some highly zen lines.
  • In an interview, Glen Phillips asserts that most of his songs are Post-Its. He gives the example of a verse in “All I Want” as much of how fleeting any type of epiphany is.
  • The track was sold in various formats, including CD, as a promo, and single.
  • Toad the Wet Sprocket split in 1998 to pursue other projects. However, the band began touring the US in 2006 in small venues and short run tours during summer.

Lyrics

Nothing so loud

As hearing when we lie

Truth is not kind

And you’ve said neither am I

And the air outside so soft is saying everything

Everything

All I want is to feel this way

To be this close, to feel the same

All I want is to feel this way

The evening speaks, I feel it say

Nothing’s so cold

As closing the heart when all we need

Is to free the soul

But we wouldn’t be that brave I know

And the air outside so soft, confessing everything

Everything

All I want is to feel this way

To be this close, to feel the same

All I want is to feel this way

The evening speaks, I feel it say

And it won’t matter now

Whatever happens will be

Though the air speaks of all we’ll never be

It won’t trouble me

All I want is to feel this way

To be this close, to feel the same

All I want is to feel this way

The evening speaks, I feel it say

All I want is to feel this way (And it feels so close)

To be this close, to feel the same (Let it take me in)

All I want is to feel this way (Let it hold me so)

The evening speaks, I feel it say (I can feel it say)
