“You’ll Never Know” is a classic song that numerous artists have recorded successfully. Based on a poem written by a war bride, Harry Warren and Mack Gordon penned a tune that still makes lovers swoon today.
“You’ll Never Know” first appeared in the 1943 movie Hello, Frisco, Hello. Alice Faye sang it, and the song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Alice Faye then performed the same song in another film, Four Jills in a Jeep, in 1944. Though this song is often credited to Faye as her “signature song,” most people recognize it more from popular recording artists Frank Sinatra and Dick Haymes.
Frank Sinatra and Dick Haymes both recorded versions of the song in 1943. Hayme’s version of the song hit #1 and spent four weeks on the charts. Though Sinatra’s version peaked at #2, it spent an impressive 16 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts. The Sinatra and Haymes records were made during the 1942–1944 musicians’ strike, an American Federation of Musicians strike against the recording companies. As a result, the recordings were made without musicians, with vocal groups replacing the usual instrumental backup.
Other famous artists have recorded “You’ll Never Know” as well. It was actually Barbara Streisand’s first ever recorded song, and it appears on her Just For The Record…box set. Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Eartha Kitt, and Bette Midler have all recorded versions of this timeless tune as well.
You’ll never know just how much I miss you
You’ll never know just how much I care
And if I tried, I still couldn’t hide my love for you
You ought to know, for haven’t I told you so
A million or more times?
You went away and my heart went with you
I speak your name in my every prayer
If there is some other way to prove that I love you
I swear I don’t know how
You’ll never know if you don’t know now
(You went away and my heart went with you
I speak your name in my every prayer)
If there is some other way to prove that I love you
I swear I don’t know how
You’ll never know if you don’t know now
You’ll never know if you don’t know now
