“She’s Got a Way” is a love ballad from Joel’s first studio album, Cold Spring Harbor. A live version was released in 1981’s Songs in the Attic.
In it, Joel describes the various characteristics of a woman that make him love her, even though he doesn’t understand why.
Although it has always been one of Joel’s most popular songs, he had some seriously mixed feelings about it at first. He thought it was too cornball, and he had a hard time performing it for years.
Critics disagreed, though, calling it one of his “most serious and adult compositions.”
Joel eventually decided that everyone’s got a corny side, and so came to embrace it.
There are two different versions of the song. The Cold Spring Harbor version has very minimal instrumentation. Mostly, it’s just piano, some cymbals, and his singing.
He redid the song on 1983’s rerelease of Cold Spring Harbor. This version has stringed instruments.

Both versions have their fans, but people generally prefer the Songs in the Attic live performance of the original, minimalist version.
