Richard Finch and Harry Wayne Casey learned much from watching people in clubs. In 1974, they used to sneak into Miami clubs and noticed what songs were tearing up dancefloors and becoming enormously popular in clubs. Accordingly, they wrote and produced George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby,” which became the first #1 single made with discos in mind. In 1976, they noticed that many people were shaking their booties, thus producing a hit that encouraged people to shake their booty.

All hits of KC & The Sunshine Band were written by Rick Finch (who was their bass player and producer) and Harry Wayne Casey (KC) (who was their lead singer/keyboard player).
According to Rick Finch, Shake Your Booty was inspired by dance moves that the group had witnessed in clubs. KC & The Sunshine Band tailored their songs to disco.
While they were performing, they paid attention to the audience—people’s body language and body movements. Afterward, they tried to transfer the experience to the next production—that’s how they did “Shake Your Booty.” They returned to the studio with freshly captured energy and recorded the hit without thinking too much.
“Shake Your Booty” was the band’s third #1 song on the Hot Soul Singles chart.
The B-side song was “Boogie Shoes,” which gained popularity and was used in the film Saturday Night Fever.
