“Let It Be” was released as a single on March 6, 1970. It was the title track from their final studio album, which was also titled Let It Be and released on May 8, 1970.
The song was written and sung by Paul McCartney. He said the idea for the song came to him in a dream of his late mother, who died from cancer when he was only fourteen years old. In the dream, his mother said, “It will be alright, just let it be.”
When speaking of the dream in an interview, McCartney said, “It was great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream.”
Although the song features the name Mother Mary in the lyrics, McCartney said he didn’t write the song to be explicitly biblical and instead clarified his wish for listeners to imbue their own meaning into the lyrics.
The song debuted at number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 and quickly rose to the top spot.
“Let It Be” was the group’s final single before Paul McCartney announced his departure from the band.
