• Men Without Hats was originally started in 1977 by Ivan Doroschuk, Pete Seabrooke, Dave Hill, John Gurrin. 
• Numerous musicians joined and left the group in the ensuing years, but by the early 1980s, the band consisted of Ivan Doroschuk, his brothers, Stefan and Colin Doroschuk, and Jérémie Arrobas.
• “The Safety Dance” was written by Ivan in 1982, and he was inspired to write the song after he got kicked out of a club in Canada for pogo dancing.
• The song peaked on the Canadian Top 50 chart at number 11 in May 1983.
• In the U.S. “The Safety Dance” peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for consecutive 24 weeks.
• The music video for the song was directed by Tim Pope, and it was filmed in Wiltshire, England.
• “The Safety Dance” was certified gold in Canada and silver in the United Kingdom.
• The song has been featured in other media, including a Lipton iced tea commercial, a “Family Guy” episode, and the film Bio-Dome.
