Today’s song of the day is “That’s Amore” by Dean Martin.
Song Facts:
- It recounts love as it is practiced in the southern Italian town of Napoli (“Amore” is Italian for “Love”).
- The artist compares the mood to his favorite Italian meals, pizza and pasta fagioli. It’s a funny love tune that pokes fun at Italian clichés, which Martin – real name Dino Crocetti – had every right to do.
- Jack Brooks wrote the words, while Harry Warren composed the music.
- The song debuted in the 1953 film The Caddy, featuring Martin and his comedic companion Jerry Lewis. Lewis said in his memoirs that while he and Dean were filming The Caddy, the writers gave Dean nothing to do. Knowing that this would aggravate their already fragile relationship, Jerry approached musician Harry Warren behind Dean’s back and urged him to create a smash song for Dean to perform in the film. This was the end outcome.
- That same day after “That’s Amore” was debuted, Martin’s recording of “You’re The Right One” (which was recorded at the same session as “That’s Amore”) peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard charts alongside “That’s Amore,” Martin’s main hit from that year!
- The song was also featured in the following television shows:
- Frasier
- Friends
- King of the Hill
- The Simpsons
- The Sopranos
- It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Lyrics:
(In Napoli where love is king
When boy meets girl here’s what they say)
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That’s amore
When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine
That’s amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you’ll sing “Vita bella”
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella
When the stars make you drool just like a pasta e fasul
That’s amore
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You’re in love
When you walk in a dream but you know you’re not dreaming signore
Scusami, but you see, back in old Napoli
That’s amore
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore
That’s amore,
When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine, that’s amore
That’s amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you’ll sing “Vita bella” (Vita bel-, vita bella)
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella
Lucky fella
When the stars make you drool just like a pasta e fasul, that’s amore
That’s amore
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You’re in love
When you walk in a dream but you know you’re not dreaming signore
Scusami, but you see, back in old Napoli
That’s amore
Amore, that’s amore
