Rock Around The Clock – Bill Haley & His Comets

January 21, 2022

Today’s song is “Rock Around The Clock” by Bill Haley and His Comets.
This band spearheaded the Rock and Roll movement alongside Elvis and Little Richard.

Although they didn’t get the same publicity, their song “Rock Around The Clock” was one of their biggest hits.

Song Facts:

  • “Rock Around The Clock” was the first international #1 rock and roll hit.
  • Bill Haley died in a shed in his backyard in 1981.
  • In Europe, “Rock Around The Clock” was seen to be the first teenage anthem. This song caused riots at school and in movie theaters. Teenagers gravitated towards this song and its relentless tone.
  • Bill Haley and “Rock Around The Clock” were so well known in Britain that this song took the #1 spot on the charts eighteen months before Elvis got his first hit with “Heartbreak Hotel.”
  • In later years, Bill Haley started to get spiteful about the fact that his career was slipping away. He felt like he didn’t get the rock and roll credit that he deserved.
  • With the 50s being such a finicky time for rock and roll to start making an appearance, Bill Haley’s hits were all in the early wave of this genre. Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis both follow the same suit. Elvis is the only exception; he was the most popular out of these artists.
  • Bill Haley was originally a country singer.
  • Bill Haley and His Comets formed in 1952. They continued to perform together until Haley passed in 1981.

(LyricFind)

One, two, three o’clock, four o’clock, rock

Five, six, seven o’clock, eight o’clock, rock

Nine, ten, eleven o’clock, twelve o’clock, rock

We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

Put your glad rags on and join me, hon’

We’ll have some fun when the clock strikes one

We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight

We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight

When the clock strikes two, three and four

If the band slows down we’ll yell for more

We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight

We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight

When the chimes ring five, six and seven

We’ll be right in seventh heaven

We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight

We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight

When it’s eight, nine, ten, eleven too

I’ll be goin’ strong and so will you

We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight

We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight

When the clock strikes twelve, we’ll cool off then

Start a rockin’ round the clock again

We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight

We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
