The next song is “True Love Ways.” Initially, it was recorded by Buddy Holly, who was a major figure of the rock and roll of the mid-1950s. However, “True Love Ways” went on to be recorded by a number of other artists as well.
Here are some facts about this song:
- Holly’s widow Maria Elena Holly has stated that “True Love Ways” was written for her as a wedding gift. As the story goes, he asked her to marry him just five hours into their first date, with the result that the two were married less than two months later. Unfortunately, Holly died very young. On top of that, Maria Elena Holly learned of his death from TV reporting, which contributed to a miscarriage from psychological trauma. This was one of the major factors that convinced the authorities to refuse to disclose the names of victims until after their family members had been informed.
- As such, “True Love Ways” was recorded at Holly’s last recording session before the fatal airplane crash that happened on February 3 of 1959. Said session took place at the Pythian Temple, which is a building that can still be found in Manhattan’s Lincoln Square neighborhood.
- The melody of “True Love Ways” took a great deal of influence from a gospel song called “I’ll Be All Right.” This makes sense because it was one of Holly’s favorites. In fact, he loved it so much that it was played at his funeral. It is believed that Holly provided the framework of the melody while the lyrics and the rest of the song were provided by Holly’s record producer Norman Petty.
Lyrics:
Just you know why
Why you and I
Will bye and bye
Know true love ways
Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And we’ll know why
Just you and I
Know true love ways
Throughout the days
Our true love ways
Will bring us joys to share
With those who really care
Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And we’ll know why
Just you and I
Know true love ways
Throughout the days
Our true love ways
Will bring us joys to share
With those who really care
Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And we’ll know why
Just you and I
Know true love ways
