Today’s Song of the Day is a classic doo-wop masterpiece, “I Only Have Eyes for You,” by The Flamingos.

  • Composed in 1934 by Harry Warren, the song first wooed audiences in the Warner Bros. musical comedy Dames. Ruby Keeler swoons as leading man Dick Powell serenades her with lyrics by Al Dubin.
  • The Flamingos recorded their classic doo-wop version in 1959. At the time, the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart had only been around less than a year, and the song reached number 11.
  • Flamingos band member Terry “Buzzy” Johnson, who co-produced the track, claimed the harmony and “sh-bops” came to him in a dream.
  • The Lettermen’s contemporary take on the song peaked at 72 on the Hot 100 and number 4 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart in 1966.
  • Art Garfunkel’s soft rock version hit number one in the U.K. and Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart in 1975.
  • The Flamingos’ swoon-worthy version is a Hollywood favorite, appearing in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, A Bronx Tale, and Something’s Gotta Give.
  • According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes for You” ranked number one on the Top TV Songs chart after featuring on an episode of Netflix’s The Crown in 2018.

Lyrics:

(LyricFind)

My love must be a kind of blind love

I can’t see anyone but you

(Sha bop sha bop)

(Sha bop sha bop)

(Sha bop sha bop)

(Sha bop sha bop)

(Sha bop sha bop)

Are the stars out tonight (sha bop sha bop)

I don’t know if it’s cloudy or bright (sha bop sha bop)

I only have eyes for you dear

(Sha bop sha bop)

The moon may be high

(Sha bop sha bop)

But I can’t see (sha bop sha bop) a thing in the sky

I only have eyes for you

I don’t know if we’re in a garden

Or on a crowded avenue

(Sha bop sha bop)

You are here

(Sha bop sha bop)

And so am I

(Sha bop sha bop)

Maybe millions of people (sha bop sha bop) go by

But they all disappear from view

And I only have eyes for you
