The song of the day is a pop song with Caribbean influences. It was written and sung by Lionel Richie.
Song Facts
- “All Night Long (All Night)” was released on Richie’s second solo album, “Can’t Slow Down,” in 1983. If you’re old enough, you saw him perform it during the closing ceremonies of the Los Angeles Olympics of 1984.
- The video features a cast of interracial dancers wearing colorful outfits performing a variety of dances popular at the time.
- Richie wanted an African segment to the song, and so he called the UN to get a few words translated. He was appalled to learn that Africa had dozens of languages and thousands of dialects. There was no way for him to choose, so he made up the African words on the spot.
- The song reached number 1 on Billboard on November 6 and was nominated for a Grammy for best song of the year in 1983. It remained on the top 100 list for 20 weeks.
- Richie wrote a series of hit songs for his group (the Commodores) in the 1970s and 1980s. These include “Sail On” and “Three Times a Lady.” He left the group to go solo in 1982.
- In 1986, as a solo artist, he released “Dancin’ on the Ceiling,” which featured an amazing video in which he appeared to be dancing up the wall onto the ceiling of a room–then the other dancers joined him.
- Lionel Richie is still performing his songs at concerts.
Lyrics:
Da Da, ooooh
Well, my friends, the time has come
To raise the roof and have some fun
Throw away the work to be done
Let the music play on (play on, play on, play on…)
Everybody sing, everybody dance
Lose yourself in wild romance
We’re going to Party, Karamu, Fiesta, forever
Come on and sing along!
We’re going to Party, Karamu, Fiesta, forever
Come on and sing along!
All night long (all night), All night (all night)
All night long (all night), All night (all night)
All night long (all night), All night (all night)
All night long! (all night), Ooh, yeah (all night)
People dancing all in the street
See the rhythm all in their feet
Life is good, wild and sweet
Let the music play on…(Play on, play on, play on…)
Feel it in your heart and feel it in your soul
Let the music take control
We’re going to Party, Liming, Fiesta, forever
Come on and sing along
We’re going to Party, Liming, Fiesta, forever
Come on and sing my song!
All night long (all night), oooh, (all night)
All night long (all night), yeaz, (all night)
All night long (all night), yeah, (all night)
All night long (all night)…(all night)
Yeah, once you get started you can’t sit down
Come join the fun, it’s a merry-go-round
Everyone’s dancing their troubles away
Come join our party, See how we play!
