• The lyrics describe a girl who lives a wild life in her brand new Mustang car. The singer gave the girl the car, which turned her into“Mustang Sally.” Now she runs around town, ignoring her sugar daddy.
• The idea for Mustang Sally came about when Rice visited Della Reese in New York, and he told her she was considering buying a new Lincoln Continental for her husband, drummer Calvin Shields. Shields had desired a Ford Mustang sports car as a birthday gift.
• Wilson Pickett recorded his version at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in October 1966, with producers Rick Hall and Tom Dowd at the controls and members of the legendary backing group The Swampers.
• The song became an instant hit when he recorded it in October 1966. In 1998, Rolling Stone named it one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
