Fun Facts
- The folk-rock ballad Landslide was written by Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac and was featured on the self-titled debut album Fleetwood Mac in 1975. The song reached the No. 51 slot on the US Billboard Hot 100 list and No. 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In October of 2009, Landslide went Gold with sales of over 500,000 records in the US.
- According to Nicks, she wrote the song when visiting Aspen, Colorado. She was trying to decide on her future in music or going back to school when the first album she recorded with Lindsey Buckingham was dropped by their record company Polydor Records. She stated that she was looking out a window looking out at the Rocky Mountains contemplating the avalanche of uncertainty that has crashed down on her. She said her life truly felt like a landslide in many ways.
- The song’s deeply emotional and universally felt lyrics helped fuel the Fleetwood Mac debut album to go on to be one of the biggest selling albums of the 1970s. It also helped cement Nicks as one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time.
- Nicks has performed the song during nearly all Fleetwood Mac tours and her solo tours. It is a staple of classic rock. It is considered to be one of the greatest rock songs penned in the last 50 years.
- “Landslide” has been covered by The Smashing Pumpkins, The Dixie Chicks, Tori Amos and Harry Styles. It was also performed by the cast of the US television show Glee on an episode of the series.
Lyrics
I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
‘Til the landslide brought me down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin’ ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
Oh! I’m getting older too
Oh-oh, take my love, take it down
Oh-oh, climb a mountain and you turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide bring it down
Oh-ohh, the landslide bring it down
