Today’s song of the day is the 1966 pop-rock smash hit “I’m A Believer” by The Monkees.
Fun Facts
- It was written by singer-songwriter Neil Diamond.
- Released on November 12, 1966, it went gold within 2 days because of over 1 million pre orders.
- The single sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, placing it in the 40 best selling singles of all time.
- It followed the Monkee’s previously popular single “Last Train to Clarksville.”
- Members of the Monkees were:
- Micky Dolenz
- Michael Nesmith
- Davy Jones
- Peter Tork
- Formed in 1966, the Monkees had a wildly popular television show that featured “I’m A Believer” four times the month after the single was released.
- The idea for the Monkees came from filmmaker Bob Rafelson who wanted to create a show based on a traveling band.
- The original show was supposed to follow an existing band, The Lovin’ Spoonful, but they’d already signed a record contract.
- Davy Jones was announced as the first member in 1965, while the remaining 3 were chosen after responding to ads in Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
- In deciding which member would play the drums, producers thought Davy Jones was too short and would disappear behind the drum set.
- The song has been featured in The Simpsons, South Park, and covered by Smash Mouth for 2001’s Shrek.
Lyrics
I thought love was only true in fairytales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Love was out to get me
That’s the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love, I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried
I thought love was more or less a givin’ thing
Seems the more I gave the less I got
What’s the use in trying?
All you get is pain
When I needed sunshine I got rain
Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love, I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried
Love was out to get me
Now that’s the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Oh then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love, I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried
Yes I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Said I’m a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(I’m a believer)
(I’m a believer)
Said I’m a believer, yeah
(I’m a believer)
Said I’m a believer, yeah
(I’m a believer)
