Fun Facts
- The original song was composed by Swiss musician Werner Thomas in the 1950s.
- Thomas found inspiration at a ski resort after watching skiers go downhill and flap their arms like ducks.
- He made up some silly duck-dance movements to go along with the song.
- Thomas titled the song “The Duck Dance”.
- Belgian producer Louis van Rymenant heard Thomas perform The Duck Dance at a hotel gathering and liked it.
- Van Rymenant created his unique spin via synthesizer with Bobby Setter’s Cash & Carry band in 1973.
- In 1980, local Dutch band De Electronica released another rendering called “The Dance of the Little Birds.”
- Local radio stations in parts of the Netherlands gave the song a lot of airtime, paving the way for its international introduction to the rest of the world.
- Producer Stanley Mills heard it in France and bought the American rights to the song. He titled his take “Dance Little Bird.”
- At a 1981 Oktoberfest celebration in Tulsa, a German band played “Dance Little Bird.”
- A local tv station gave the band a chicken suit for the performance, and they taught the crowd the dance that Thomas created.
- The Tulsa event was thought to be the moment that “The Chicken Dance” was born.
- Eventually, Mill’s Dance Little Bird song, now “The Chicken Dance,” brought him some limited commercial success totaling about $50,000 in 2000.
